How can I hear Amara better?

How can I hear Amara better?

The quickest fix is usually your phone's volume. You can also connect headphones or hearing aids, and there are a few settings that help if you hear better on one side. You can change any of these back whenever you like.

Turning the volume up

  1. While Mia or Max is talking, press the upper volume button on the side of your phone a few times.
  2. You can also adjust the volume inside Amara, in the app's settings — or just ask, by tapping the green Talk button and saying "Please speak up."

Connecting headphones

  1. Switch your headphones on.
  2. Open Settings, then Bluetooth, and make sure Bluetooth is on.
  3. Tap your headphones in the list to connect them.

Connecting hearing aids

Many hearing aids connect a little differently from ordinary headphones:

  • On an iPhone or iPad: go to Settings → Accessibility → Hearing Devices, and choose your hearing aids there.
  • On an Android phone: open Settings → Bluetooth (or Connected devices), or look under Accessibility → Hearing aids if your aids support it.

If you're not sure, the simplest thing is to message us here in the chat and we'll help you set them up.

If you hear better on one side

You can balance the sound, or send it equally to both sides:

  • On an iPhone or iPad: Settings → Accessibility → Audio & Visual, then adjust Balance, or turn on Mono Audio.
  • On an Android phone: Settings → Accessibility, then Audio balance or Mono audio.

Good to know

A quiet room — the telly off, a window closed — often helps more than any setting. And if a word goes by too fast or too quietly, you can always say "Could you say that again, please?"
